0.10.2 — hiding, in two strengths

The hiding added a day earlier had one strength: a series disappeared from the navigation, from the list of series, from the stream, from the feed, from the sitemap and from the offline bundle all at once. That is what a decision about a series with nothing to breathe on looks like — a single entry from months ago has no business inviting anyone in.

The first use showed it is not the only case. Some series hold good entries yet have no claim to a slot in the menu: too little of them to stand beside those publishing every other day, too much to pull their writing out of circulation. Total hiding settles the first half of that and ruins the second — the entries stop appearing where a reader would have met them anyway.

The hiding field now takes one of two values instead of a plain yes. Total disappearance stays as it was. The weaker variant takes away the series' signboard — no navigation, no place on the list of series — while its entries keep flowing in the stream and the feed, level with the rest. In both variants the series' own address works and shows everything it holds.

The distinction fitted into one place, because the stream, the feed, the sitemap and the offline bundle all draw from the same list. The filter that used to reject every hidden series now rejects only those hidden entirely; the navigation and the list of series still do not ask about shade and skip both. The series' own index knows nothing of it, having taken a separate path from the start.

Records written before this change read as total disappearance. It is the only sensible reading: an instance that hid a series under the old rule wanted it out of sight everywhere, and swapping the engine must not suddenly release it into the stream. Choosing the weaker variant takes a deliberate word in the series file — like every other decision about what the reader gets to see.
